ASSESSMENTS & ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

1. Assessments

All courses involve continuous assessments as a means of determining what you can do. However, depending on the structure of course, you may also have to sit prelims and end of year exams.

Either way the bad news is that you cannot "wing it". To last the pace you should follow the advice given below:

  • be organised
  • meet deadlines
  • make sure that you understand what the lecturer is looking for
  • if you get into difficulties with the organisation of your work, don’t just hope it will all work out, speak to your tutor who will help you plan your schedule
  • do not file all your work in one small folder! You will get totally confused as to what goes where. Keep each subject in a separate file and label it accurately
  • make sure you submit re-drafted and corrected work on time. It is your responsibility - not the lecturer's - to ensure that you are meeting the course requirements

2. Assessment Procedures

The Course Tutor will explain to you what you are required to do for each of the units you are studying. You should make sure that you understand what is required of you before you complete the assessment. If you are uncertain, ask for clarification, and continue asking until it is clear. Remember all courses are student-centred - you should be given every assistance in reaching the course requirements, but it is also up to you.

If work that has been submitted does not meet the performance criteria, you will be given an opportunity to re-draft and re-submit by a specified deadline.

Verifiers are appointed by SQA. Verifiers in all the subject areas visit the College to monitor progress and check that assessment standards are being met. The verifier has the final say on whether or not you pass the module or unit.

There is an appeals mechanism available to students who have not passed an assessment. The usual grounds for appeal are personal circumstances affecting the case that were not known to the people who made the decision irregularities in assessment procedures which may have affected students' results.

If you wish to appeal against an assessment procedure you should make this in writing to your Course Tutor. The appeal will be discussed and you will be notified of the decision.

If you do miss a class, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see the class lecturer BEFORE THE NEXT CLASS to get copies of handouts, homework etc that you may have missed.

Please note the term dates you have been given and don't schedule holidays during term time. These will be treated as absences.

Students on Work Placement who will not be attending must telephone their Supervisor at the placement to let them know that they will not be in that day.
