Child, Health and Social Care

Course Description

This course has been designed as an ideal introduction for anyone who is thinking of taking up employment, or going on to further study, in the Child, Health or Social Care fields.  It provides a wide range of options and covers a range of subject areas such as:

  • values and principles in care
  • psychology
  • sociology for care
  • working in early education and child care
  • child development and health
  • play in early education

In addition, students will consider health and safety issues and first aid and the course will include work placements which will expand vocational and employability skills.

There will also be opportunities to develop core skills in IT and Communications, and to undertake English at Intermediate 2 or Higher level.  Click to download PDF Course Information Sheet.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course is by application and is at the discretion of the college. Download our Application Form or get one from your nearest college learning centre or telephone Admissions on 01599 566770.

Candidates will have completed a minimum of 4 years of secondary education and have 3 Standard Grades at General Level, or Intermediate 1 English and Mathematics/Numeracy.  All applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong desire and commitment to study. If you are a mature student, your previous experience may qualify you for this course.  Please arrange an appointment with a member of College staff to discuss your eligibility.

Qualifications

Following successful completion of the required number of units, candidates will achieve a National Certificate in Child, Health and Social Care at SCQF level 5. In addition if you have undertaken an IT, Communication or English qualification, you will receive certification at the level achieved.

Attendance

This full time course requires minimum attendance of 21 hours per week for the full year starting in August plus 2 periods of work placement in a care and childcare setting.  The course will be based at our Portree campus. Classes are generally scheduled between the hours of 9am and 6pm but some classes may finish after this time.Timetable details are given at the beginning of the course.

Progression

This course provides well articulated progression routes. The course can be tailored to gain the qualifications necessary to apply for nurse training, to progress to the NQ in Early Education and Childcare, HNC in Early Education and Childcare, the BA Child and Youth Studies or to go on to other higher education institutions or employment.

Cost

Fee waivers may apply and all units within this course are approved by ILA Scotland.
