Absolute Beginners

Course Description

Reduce the fear of turning on your computer. This excellent course is for anyone who is terrified of their computer, who does not know where to start and who needs a little help to get going. You will gain confidence while learning what your computer can do. 

This is a short course with tutored sessions and mentor support. It gets you using the mouse, the keyboard and the computer.

During this course you will learn about some of the basic terminology relating to computers and how to use the keyboard and mouse.

You will learn how to start using your computer and you will discover Windows and how to start different programs

  • You will learn about the different bits of a computer and how to use a mouse and keyboard
  • You will be introduced to the different keys on the keyboard and how to get just one capital letter and use the Caps Lock Key
  • You will start using Word to create a new document, type in text, make changes to your text and learn how to save your work

Entry requirements

You do not need any experience. You do not need to know how to use a mouse or keyboard. You are encouraged to practise skills between sessions either on your own computer at home or on a computer at your college learning centre.

Qualifications

College Learning Centre Certificate following attendance.

Attendance

This is a flexible 6-week course comprising of three informal, tutor led sessions, each session a week a part. It is a hands on, tutored course for small groups, with plenty of practise and time for questions. We strongly recommend that you attend all tutored sessions, where possible.

These courses are available at all of our college learning centres in Portree, Staffin, Sleat and the Kyle area.

Progression

After this course, you may like to do our Using a keyboard course or Digital Computing unit.

Cost

£80 This includes all learning materials, workbooks, access to a college learning centre computer.  This is an ILA Scotland approved course. Ask your college learning centre for more information on how to apply for this funding or call ILA Scotland free on 0808 100 1090.  Applications may take around 4 weeks.
