Core Mathematics 2 Open Learning (SCQF Level 3/4)

Course Description

Build up your maths skills on this flexible, open learning course.

This course would suit anyone who would like to improve their maths skills beyond a basic level. It will introduce geometry and algebra and provide you with confidence in applying these skills to everyday situations.

There are 5 Learning Outcomes (assessments) to complete for this unit, the last one being a project based on the previous four for which guidance will be given.

Topics include:

  • Basic calculations – working with time, measure, weight, capacity and temperature as well as fractions, percentage, proportion and averages
  • Using tables, charts and graphs - to extract information and complete calculations to solve everyday problems
  • Using basic geometrical properties – working with shape such as triangles, circles and rectangles to calculate area, volume etc.
  • Evaluating expressions and formulae – for applying calculations to familiar everyday maths problems
  • Mathematical investigation – carrying out an activity using a range of skills developed on course.

Entry requirements

As this is a self-access flexible learning course you will be working with workbooks and learning materials; it may be helpful if you already have some basic maths skills or a maths qualification at SCQF Level 3 (Foundation standard grade); you will be given assistance in choosing the best course for you dependent on experience, qualifications and reasons for study.
