Core Mathematics 3 Open Learning (SCQF Level 4)

Course Description

Build up your maths skills on this flexible, open learning course.

This course would suit anyone who would like to further improve their maths skills and it introduces the understanding and application of algebra and trigonometry.

There are 5 Learning Outcomes (assessments) to complete for this unit, the last one being a project based on the previous four for which guidance will be given.

Topics include:

  • Using graphical relationships – including plotting points on the Cartesian diagram (x & y axes) and understanding equations of lines to apply these to practical examples.
  • Performing basic algebraic operations – where problem solving uses symbols in equations to represent 'variable' or 'constant' values to calculate results.
  • Solving right-angled triangles – an introduction to trigonometry and its uses.
  • Mathematical investigation – carrying out an activity using a range of skills developed on course.

Entry requirements

As this is a self-access flexible learning course you will be working with workbooks and learning materials; it may be helpful if you already have some basic maths skills or a maths qualification such as Core Mathematics 2 or other at SCQF Level 3 (Foundation standard grade); you will be given assistance in choosing the best course for you dependent on experience, qualifications and reasons for study.
