Digital Computing

Course Description

Never used a computer before? This course is for you! This great course starts right from the beginning, for anyone who has barely touched a computer. You will gain the confidence to start using your computer without the fear of “what might happen”’!


This is a short course with tutored sessions and mentor support. It gets you using a computer safe in the knowledge that you know what everything does, and where everything lives!

  • You will learn about the different parts of a computer, what they all do and how to use them.
  • You will discover what runs the computer, where things are stored and how to store things yourself using different storage devices.
  • You will be introduced to some software packages such as word processing, which you will use to produce and edit some basic files.
  • You will also be introduced to computer Health and Safety and problem solving skills.

During this course you will carry out an assessment.

Entry requirements

You may have already done our Absolute Beginners course, but you do not need any experience to attend this course. You will be encouraged to practise skills between sessions and following the course. This can be done at your college learning centre.

Qualifications

On successful completion of the assignments you will be awarded with and on successful completion you will be awarded with one SQA credit at level 3.

Attendance

This course can take up to 40 hours of learning which will depend on your current level of skill.  This consists of 6 - 8 tutored classes lasting 2½ hours, scheduled 1 week apart. (classes will run subject to viable numbers).

Progression

After this course, you may like to consider one of our other Digital Literacy units, Using a Keyboard or PC Passport Word.

Cost

£64   This is an ILA Scotland approved course. Ask your college learning centre for more information on how to apply for this funding or call ILA Scotland free on 0808 100 1090.  Applications may take around 4 weeks.  Your ILA Scotland account must be in place, before you start this course.  The cost of this course includes all tutor based learning materials, access to college learning centre pc, assessment and SQA certification of successful completion. Fee waivers may also apply.
