English Higher
If you missed out on this qualification at school and need it now to help gain entry to Higher Education, or you simply want to refresh your skills, this may be the course for you. It aims to improve your writing and extend your knowledge of literature in prose, poetry and drama.

Course Description
The course consists of two units plus a folio of writing -
Language study
• Outcome 1 Close reading of a non-fiction text.
• Outcome 2 Composition of a piece of writing which is informative, expressive or creative.
In preparation you will explore a wide variety of texts such as; reference texts,reports and factual articles from journalistic texts,feature articles dealing with different points of view, persuasive texts including advertisements, biography and autobiography, letters and memoirs; formal essays and literary texts from different genres. These will include informative, expressive, imaginative and creative styles and you will study and analyse them for information and meaning.
English literary study
• Outcome Textual analysis of an unseen text.
In preparation you will explore texts from at least two different genres such as: prose, novels, short stories, autobiography, memoirs, diary, travelogue, essays; drama and mass media.
Writing folio - For this you are required to produce two pieces of writing, one of which is broadly discursive and one of which is broadly creative. You will have the opportunity to redraft your work which will contribute 20% towards the final mark.
Assessment Process
Internal assessments (marked by your tutor) take place throughout the course. You will also sit an preliminary exam in February at the College learning centre and an external exam in May. These last 3 hours 15 minutes and consist of a Close Reading paper of two thematically linked prose passages - 1 hour 45 minutes, and a Critical Essay paper of two questions each on a different genre studied during the course - 1.5 hours.
Entry Requirements
To achieve this qualification it would be helpful if you have an English Standard Grade at foundation level or have completed an access level communication course but ‘life experience’ can count for a lot so please get in touch to discuss if this is the right course for you.
Qualifications
On successful completion you will receive an English Higher SQA certificate which is at SQCF level 6.
Attendance
The course will run for 32 weeks up to the examination in May with a 2.5 hours tuition session each week which you are required to attend. You will need to be motivated and prepared to study at home or book a space at one of our college learning centres to complete the additional course work.

Cost
£270. This is an ILA Scotland approved course. Ask your college learning centre for more information on how to apply for this funding or call ILA Scotland free on 0808 100 1090. Applications may take around 4 weeks. Costs include tutored sessions, assessments and certification at the end of the course. Learners will be expected to purchase, or borrow from a library, their own texts.
