English Intermediate 2

If you missed out on standard grade English at school or you simply want to refresh your skills, this may be the course for you. It aims to improve your writing and extend your knowledge of literature in prose, poetry and drama.

Course Description

The course consists of three units - 

English language   This unit focuses on different styles of writing. It includes informative, expressive, imaginative and creative styles and you will study and analyse them for information and meaning. 

English literary study This unit focuses developing skills in reading and responding critically to literary texts such as  fiction, poetry, drama or mass media. At least one of these texts will be Scottish.

Personal study/written response   For this unit candidates will select texts or topics of particular personal interest and pursue independent study of their chosen material. The written response requires the candidate to express and justify a critical point of view in a piece of writing produced under controlled conditions. 

Assessment  Process  Internal assessments (marked by your tutor) take place throughout the course. You will sit a preliminary exam at the learning centre in February and an external exam in May 2009 lasting 2.5 hours and made up of a Close reading paper - 1hr and a Critical essay paper - 1 hr 30mins

Entry Requirements

To achieve this qualification it would be helpful if you have an English Standard Grade at General level, or have English Intermediate 1 or achieved Communication 3, but ‘life experience’ can count for a lot so please get in touch to discuss if this is the right course for you.

Qualifications

On successful completion you will receive an English Intermediate 2 SQA certificate which is at SQCF level 5.

Attendance

The course will run for 32 weeks with a 2.5 hours tuition session each week which you are required to attend. You will need to be motivated and prepared to study at home or book a space at one of our college learning centres to complete the additional course work.
