ESOLCourse DescriptionThis Unit has been designed for candidates whose first language is not English but who need to develop their use of English in personal and social contexts. This course will help to develop the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing English for personal and social purposes. Candidates will be able to understand short, straightforward spoken and written texts, write short, straightforward texts and talk to others on topics of immediate personal and general interest. This course can take up to 40 hours of learning which will depend on the candidate's current level of skill. There are three different units to choose from, these are: Everyday Communication (Unit 1) Focusing on topics such as: personal information; the family; accommodation; free time and leisure; media; expressing opinions. Transactional Contexts (Unit 2) Covering how to make purchases; enquiries; bookings; understand instructions; get information; make complaints. Work & Study related Contexts (Unit 3) Communicate well in the workplace or gain the skills to study in English. It is recommended that you start with Everyday Communication (Unit 1) as this will develop speech, reading and writing on a wide range of topics before focusing on the more complex and specific vocabulary of the other units. After completion, you can progress to the same unit at a higher level, or to a different unit at at the same level to extend your skills. By the end of the course you will have correctly completed a series of short practical assessments, covering the course content as listed above. Entry requirementCandidates undertaking this Unit should have some previous knowledge of English at a basic level and will be familiar with the Roman script. QualificationsOn successful completion of the assessments, you will achieve your SQA certificate at one of the following levels depending on your ability: Access Level 2 Access Level 3 Intermediate 1 Intermediate 2 Higher AttendanceThe course requires attendance at your college learning centre for a minimum of 2hrs hours per week for a minimum of 14 and up to 20 weeks. Sessions will be held in the afternoon or evening. In addition there is an element of self learning required and you will need to do some work at home or book a study space at your college learning centre to allow you to complete all the course work.
