First StepsCourse DescriptionDo you want to boost your confidence, get some practical skills and gain a qualification at the same time? We can help you create your own individual action plan get your qualification at the end of the programme. The course is very practical. It offers you the chance to work with others and take part in a project that will be fun and help build you confidence and motivation. The course will also help you with your job search, update your knowledge of the world of work and encourage you to look at your own skills and aspirations. You will learn how to make the best use of vacancy websites, how to complete an application form, how to prepare a CV and cover letter, and how to prepare for interviews. You will be given information on starting and keeping a job, current training opportunities including open and distance learning, IT awareness and, if needed, self employment. If you need any help with reading, writing or maths then college staff will be able to help. You will also be given access to advice and guidance from a number of local agencies who help support people into work. Entry requirementsThere are no formal entry requirements. However all applicants must be able to demonstrate their commitment to attending and completing the course. QualificationsOn successful completion you will be awarded a Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) unit in Personal Development: Self Awareness. AttendanceThe course comprises three days per week (usually Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) for two weeks starting at 9.30am and finishing at 3.30pm. You will be part of a small group and be supported by tutors. Start Date and VenueThe next course is planned for end January in Portree with further courses planned for later in the year. CostThis course is FREE to participants. European Social Funding (ESF) funding may also be available to help towards the cost of childcare and travel. If you are in receipt of any Jobcentre Plus benefits then you may be able to continue to receive these whilst on this course. Jobcentre Plus staff will be able to give you more information if you are unsure of your entitlements.
