Course Description

Do you have concerns about using the Internet and email? Are you worried about your children or about secure shopping?

You can become smarter and safer online with the help of this interesting course.

This course is suitable for everyone of all ages, especially parents, teenagers, employers and their employees.

You will learn how to take appropriate precautions to:

  • make safe and legal use of the internet
  • protect yourself and others from viruses, theft and other threats
  • defend yourself from malicious emails and attachments
  • protect your identity from possible fraud

You will also learn about the legal constraints which apply to data security, copyright, licensing, digital rights, website content and online behaviour.

A fascinating area indeed and one you need to know about. Please ask, as we can tailor this for a particular group of people.

Entry requirements

You must be able to use a mouse, have basic keyboard skills and be able to use the internet for research and be able to navigate easily. If you are a beginner, you should have completed the our PC Passport Internet and Online Communications course first or be at that level. If you are unsure about your level, please call your nearest college learning centre to find out more. If you intend to study some of this course at home, you will need a computer, Microsoft Internet Explorer and an email account.

Qualifications

On successful completion you will be awarded with the national unit, Internet Safety SCQF level 4.

Attendance

This course can take up to 40 hours of learning which will depend on your current level of skill.  The tutored route consists of 6 - 8 classes lasting 2½ hours, scheduled 1 week apart. (classes will run subject to viable numbers).  There are regular assessments which must be carried out at the college learning centre and these times will be planned with you.

Progression

After this course, you may like to consider other PC Passport units or ECDL.

Cost

£64 This includes all learning materials, access to a college learning centre computer, assessment and SQA certification on successful completion.  This is an ILA Scotland approved course. Ask your college learning centre for more information on how to apply for this funding or call ILA Scotland free on 0808 100 1090.  Applications may take around 4 weeks. Fee waivers may apply.
